Overview of the CareerSource Heartland Region

• The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Heartland region (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, and Okeechobee counties) was 3.9 percent in February 2020. This rate was 0.4 percentage point lower than the region's year ago rate of 4.3 percent. The labor force was 78,655, up 1,605 (+2.1) over the year. There were 3,036 unemployed residents in the region..

• Okeechobee County had the lowest unemployment rate (2.9 percent) in the CareerSource Heartland region followed by DeSoto County (3.3 percent), Hardee County (4.3 percent), and Highlands County (4.4 percent).

• Employment by industry in the CareerSource Heartland region totaled 54,094 jobs in September 2019 (the latest available data). Industry employment increased by +0.6 percent over the year..

• The annual job growth rates for construction (+5.4 percent); financial activities (+3.9 percent); manufacturing (+3.3); and government (+1.3 percent) exceeded those of the state.

• The CareerSource Heartland region’s industry employment increased by 331 jobs over the year in September 2019. Six of the 11 industries added jobs over the year. The industries that gained the most jobs included: construction (+166 jobs); education and health services (+164 jobs); and government (+137 jobs).

• In February 2020 nonagricultural employment in the Sebring MSA was 26,900, an increase of 300 jobs (+1.1 percent) over the year.
