Overview of the CareerSource Heartland Region

• The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Heartland region (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, and
Okeechobee counties) was 9.5 percent in May 2020. This rate was 5.6 percentage point higher than
the region's year ago rate of 3.9 percent. The region's May 2020 unemployment rate was 4.8
percentage point lower than the state rate of 14.3 percent. The labor force was 73,215, down 4,017
(-5.2) over the year. There were 6,945 unemployed residents in the region.

• DeSoto County had the lowest unemployment rate (7.1 percent) in the CareerSource Heartland
region followed by Okeechobee County (8.3 percent), Hardee County (8.8 percent), and Highlands
County (11.2 percent).

• Employment by industry in the CareerSource Heartland region totaled 55,802 jobs in December
2019 (the latest available data). Industry employment decreased by -1.0 percent over the year.

• The annual job growth rates for construction (+7.0 percent) and manufacturing (+3.0) exceeded
those of the state.

• The CareerSource Heartland region’s industry employment decreased by 561 jobs over the year in
December 2019. four of the 11 industries added jobs over the year. The industries that gained the
most jobs included: construction (+215 jobs) and education and health services (+218 jobs).

• In May 2020 nonagricultural employment in the Sebring MSA was 25,800, a decrease of 600 jobs
(-2.3 percent) over the year.
